Speaking during the event, Prof. Wabwoba reminded the first-year students that choosing Karatina University was a major achievement and that they were in the right place. Prof Kiai also addressed the first years and describing the academic journey as a personal garden, urging students to become “CEOs of their academic journey” by using the resources available wisely.

The Vice Chancellor, later on in his speech, using the metaphor of a garden, challenged the students to cultivate the right mindset and plant positive habits. He warned them against letting procrastination and the opinions of others hinder personal growth. He emphasized the need to protect their personal growth and nurture it, advising them to never lose sight of their purpose and never compare themselves with others. He further assured that the university is committed to mentoring them throughout their journey.

The Vice Chancellor also encouraged the students to come up with ideas and engage with lecturers since the university strives to be a world-class university, and this is only possible through innovative student research. He also encouraged them to talk about their challenges, seek solutions, and approach their student leaders whenever necessary. Quoting his philosophy, he reminded the students that “Freedom without responsibility is slavery.” He further urged them to embrace DPP – Discipline, Persist, Persevere – as guiding values in their academic and personal lives.

In conclusion, he challenged the students to help build Karatina University’s legacy by creating not just careers but strong characters and not just earning degrees but writing compelling stories of growth. The event ended with a sense of anticipation and excitement for the journey ahead, as the students embark on a transformative path of learning, innovation, and personal growth.
