Master of Public Health Nutrition and Policy

MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION AND POLICY

The philosophy of the Master of Science Degree Programme in PHNP is to develop high level manpower to pursue careers in academics, research and policy formulation. It is aimed at producing skilled manpower in public health nutrition and policy.

The programme is envisioned to produce human manpower able to: 

  1. Design and implement nutrition programs that promotes health and addresses community nutrition problems
  2. Produce skilled manpower capable of translating research in public health nutrition into policy.
  3. Improve community knowledge regarding the role of specific food groups in optimizing eating habits of specific groups of population.
  4. Apply the knowledge and skills to undertake quality nutrition practice to promote development in a range of settings including disasters and emergencies.
  5. Carry out research aimed at improving nutrition, health, economic and social development.
  6. Use conceptual and theoretical knowledge to develop, monitor and evaluate advocacy for health policy through a multidisciplinary approach.

 

Admission Requirements

The program is open to Kenyans and Non- Kenyans who fulfil the admission requirements. The requirements described below are only the minimum academic conditions for admission and only makes one eligible for consideration. A candidate is eligible for admission if he/she satisfies any of the following:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Biochemistry, Public Health, MBBS, BDS, BNSc and other health sciences with a minimum of 2nd class honours upper division or CGPA of 3.0 on a scale of 5.0 OR 2nd class honours lower division / CGPA of 2.75 on a scale of 5.0 with at least two years relevant work experience
  2. A degree in Biological Sciences Eg. biology, laboratory sciences, environmental sciences etc with a minimum of 2nd class honours upper division or CGPA of 3.0  on a scale of 5.0  OR  2nd class honours lower division/  CGPA of 275  on a scale of 5.0 with at least two years relevant work experience
  3. A degree in Social Sciences eg. Social work, sociology, statistics, demography etc with a minimum of 2nd class honours upper division /  CGPA of 3.0  on a scale of 5. OR 2nd class honours lower division /  CGPA of 2.75  on a scale of 5.0 with at least two years relevant work experience

Mode of study

The programme is student-centered full time. It consists of course work (lectures, tutorials, seminars, etc.) and dissertation. This programme takes advantage of Karatina University well established Open Distance and eLearning (ODeL) and a learning management system (LMS ). These together with integrated hands-on mentorship provides the solution needed to meet the needs of public health nutrition and policy training in Africa and beyond.
