The World Day of Remembrance (WDoR) of Road Crash Victims is an annual event commemorated every third Sunday of November. It is a global event set aside by the UN General Assembly to remember millions of people who have been killed or seriously injured on the world’s roads and to acknowledge the suffering of all affected victims, families and communities. The Day is also important for governments to acknowledge and pay tribute to all those whose work involves crash prevention, and response teams such as emergency crews, police and medical professionals who daily deal with the traumatic aftermath of road deaths and injuries. Indeed, the day offers the opportunity to demonstrate the enormous scale and impact of road deaths and injuries, advocate for an end to the often trivial and inappropriate response to road death and injury and campaign for urgent concerted action to stop the road carnage.

In full cognizance of the significance of WDoR, that has been observed for the last 26 years, Karatina University fraternity is reminded the specific objectives of WDoR 2021 in provision of a platform for road traffic victims and their families to:

  • Remember all people killed and seriously injured on the roads;
  • Acknowledge the crucial work of the emergency services;
  • Draw attention to the generally trivial legal response to culpable road deaths and injuries;
  • Advocate for better support for road traffic victims and victim families; and
  • Promote evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries.

In line with WDoR 2021 theme – ACT for LOW SPEED STREETS the University fraternity (drivers, riders and cyclists) are urged to acknowledge and practice low speed limits not only within the precincts of the University, but in other areas designated as so. All pedestrians are also urged to utilize the walk-ways provided. This deliberate behaviour is a proactive way of reducing road traffic injuries (RTIs).

All staff and students are urged to Remember that together we can reduce or eradicate RTIs, Support road traffic injury victims and their families and Act by doing something practical within individual capacities towards the reduction of RTIs.

Kindly report any observed road noncompliance to rsmainstreaming@karu.ac.ke
