Karatina University through the Directorate of Career Services, University-Industry Linkage, and Alumni Affairs successfully hosted the 5th Annual Start-Up Expo on 27th and 28th March 2026 at the University Conference Hall. The event brought together student innovators from different universities in the region such as Karatina University, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Murang’a University, and Tharaka University. The event aimed to showcase student creativity and entrepreneurial talent under the theme “Market-Driven Innovation: Developing Solutions Aligned with Global Needs.”

The two-day Expo featured a series of workshops, mentorship sessions, and interactive exhibitions where student teams presented innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Over 180 attendees, including judges, university staff, industry guests, and students, witnessed teams refine their ideas into viable prototypes, demonstrating practical applications of technology, sustainability, and business models.
Prof. Franklin Wabwoba, DVC AR, S&A, officially opened the event, praising students for their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. He emphasized that innovation and research are key drivers of national development and encouraged participants to take pride in their work, remain resilient, and nurture curiosity and problem-solving skills.

A panel of esteemed judges, including Prof. Anthony Waititu Gichuni, Mr. Griffin Chege, and Mr. Thomas Mukundi, evaluated the final presentations based on innovation, market potential, business models, and social impact. The winning teams were:

Karatina University secured two of the top four positions, showcasing its strong innovation culture. The Expo successfully provided a platform for students to network with industry leaders, investors, and mentors, and demonstrated the University’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship, creativity, and problem-solving skills among students.
