STRENGTHENING RESILIENCE: SENSITIZATION WORKSHOP ON ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE FOR PRISON OFFICERS

On 8th April 2026, Karatina University, through the Directorate of Community Outreach, successfully conducted an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Awareness Workshop targeting officers from Nyeri Maximum, Medium, Women Prisons, and the Central Region Office.

The workshop aimed to enhance awareness and deepen understanding of alcohol and drug abuse among prison officers, with a focus on promoting healthy coping mechanisms, improving overall wellbeing, and strengthening professional effectiveness within the service.

The session was facilitated by Prof. Margaret Mwenje, Director of Community Outreach, who guided participants through key thematic areas, including risk factors associated with substance abuse, particularly within high-stress work environments. Participants also explored the stages of addiction, enabling them to recognize early warning signs and take timely action.

Further discussions focused on withdrawal symptoms and appropriate interventions, equipping officers with knowledge on when and how to seek professional support. The facilitator also emphasized recovery pathways, highlighting that addiction is treatable and that recovery is achievable through structured support systems and professional care.

The workshop brought together officers from various correctional facilities within the region, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Participants actively engaged in the sessions and expressed appreciation for the practical and relevant insights shared. They acknowledged the importance of addressing alcohol and drug abuse within the service, citing its direct impact on mental health, job performance, and overall wellbeing.

The workshop successfully achieved its objectives, reinforcing the importance of proactive interventions in addressing alcohol and drug abuse among prison officers. The Directorate of Community Outreach remains committed to supporting officer wellbeing through targeted and impactful programmes, including the strengthening of peer counselling initiatives.
