KARATINA UNIVERSITY HOSTS FREE MEDICAL CAMP IN SOLIO, LAIKIPIA COUNTY

On Saturday 28th February, Karatina University, through its Directorate of Community Outreach, made a tangible impact on community health with a Free Medical Camp at Tetu DEB Primary School in Solio, Laikipia County. The initiative aimed to provide free medical services to the local community, reinforcing the university’s commitment to social impact and community engagement.

In attendance were members of staff from the University Clinic, lecturers and students from the School of Health Sciences, the Marketing team, and other staff members. The outreach team was led by the Director of the Directorate of Community Outreach, Prof. Margaret Mwenje.

The university partnered with several health service providers such as the Kenya Red Cross, Aga Khan University Hospital, City Eye Hospital, Elephant Dental, and NACADA, among other partners. Services offered included general checkups, dental care, reproductive health consultations, and cancer screening. Over 800 people benefitted from the free medical camp.

Students from the School of Health Sciences at Karatina University played an active role in delivering medical services, gaining hands-on experience while supporting qualified healthcare professionals. Adding to the success of the camp, one of the University’s alumni also partnered with the team to enhance service delivery, further demonstrating the strength of collaborative efforts between institutions, professionals, and the community.

The Director, Directorate of Community Outreach, Prof. Margaret Mwenje, was joined by a local resident who had received treatment and expressed his gratitude to Karatina University for organizing the medical camp.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to community service and health promotion,” said a representative from the Directorate of Community Outreach. “By bringing essential healthcare services closer to the people, we hope to improve access, awareness, and overall well-being in the Solio area.”

Through initiatives such as this, Karatina University continues to demonstrate that education goes beyond the classroom by fostering community engagement, enhancing professional development for students, and building partnerships that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
