DRIVING TECHNOLOGY AND CREATIVITY: KARATINA UNIVERSITY HOSTS GENIUSLAB HACKATHON

Karatina University through the School of Computing and Informatics successfully hosted the GeniusLab Hackathon from March 26–27, 2026 at the Mwai Kibaki Library, a dynamic event aimed at fostering technological creativity and problem-solving among students from across the region. The hackathon was held under the theme: “Minds Behind the Machine: The Shield Behind the Code”, reflecting the critical role of innovation and technology in addressing contemporary challenges. The event brought together students from Embu University, Kirinyaga University, Tharaka University and the host Karatina University.

The event was officially opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Research, Student Affairs & Advancement), Prof. Franklin Wabwoba, who encouraged participants to harness their creativity and technical skills to develop solutions that contribute to sustainable development.

Over the two-day event, participants collaborated intensively to design innovative projects, demonstrating technical expertise, creativity, and critical thinking.

At the conclusion of the competition, the winning teams were:

  1. Kirinyaga University – 1st place
  2. Embu University – 2nd place
  3. Tharaka University – 3rd place
  4. Karatina University – 4th place
