On 9th July 2026, Karatina University hosted officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to discuss a proposed partnership on the adoption and conservation of the Karia Gacheru Wetland in Karatina.
The engagement brought together representatives from NEMA Headquarters and the Nyeri County Office alongside Karatina University officials to explore strategies for the sustainable management and conservation of the wetland, which plays a critical role in supporting biodiversity, water security, climate resilience, and community livelihoods.

The NEMA delegation was received by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic, Research and Student Affairs), Prof. Franklin Wabwoba, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. Prof. Wabwoba reaffirmed the University’s commitment to environmental conservation, climate action, research excellence, and impactful partnerships. He noted that the proposed collaboration aligns with the University’s vision of nurturing transformative knowledge while contributing to sustainability goals.
He further emphasized the importance of partnerships that enhance experiential learning opportunities for students. Through the collaboration, students from the School of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (SNRES) will benefit from practical exposure, field-based learning, and opportunities to apply their knowledge in addressing environmental challenges.
The NEMA team, led by Mr. Isaak Elmi, Senior Principal Ecosystems Officer, highlighted the importance of wetland conservation and the role of institutions of higher learning in advancing research, innovation, environmental education, and public awareness.

The teams discussed conservation strategies, community involvement, and measures to ensure the long-term protection of the Karia Gacheru Wetland. They also conducted a field visit to the wetland, where they assessed the ecosystem and engaged with members of the surrounding community.
