CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR SUITABLE PERSONS TO BE APPOINTED CHANCELLOR


  1. BACKGROUND

Karatina University wishes to declare a vacancy for the position of Chancellor and calls for nomination of candidates. As per the Second Schedule to the Universities Act, 2012 where a vacancy occurs in the office of the Chancellor of a public university, the Senate of that University shall, in consultation with key stakeholders, identify suitable persons for appointment. Statute V of the Karatina University Statutes, 2021 elaborate that the Senate will make a call to all Members and Stakeholders of the University to propose suitable names to be appointed as Chancellor. The Chancellor shall hold office for a term of five years and shall be eligible for re-appointment for one further term.

The Chancellor-

a) Shall be the titular head of the university and shall, in the name of the University confer degrees and grant diplomas, certificates and other awards of the University;

b) May from time to time, recommend to the Cabinet Secretary in the case of a public university and the Board of Trustees in the case of a private university, a visitation of the University;

c) May from time to time give advice to the Council which the Chancellor considers necessary for the betterment of the University; and

d) Shall enjoy such powers and privileges and perform such other functions as may be provided in the Charter.

  1. CALL FOR PROPOSAL

This call is made to all Members and stakeholders of the University to propose suitable persons to be appointed as Chancellor. The Members of the University comprise of Council, Staff, Students, and Alumni. The Stakeholders of the University is any person or group of persons involved in education, training, or research and with vested interests for the benefit of Karatina University.

  1. QUALIFYING CRITERIA

The proposed name(s) should meet the following qualifying criteria:

a. Should be an East African Citizen;

b. Should have demonstrated leadership in their occupational area. Examples of occupational areas are: as an Agriculturalist, Businessman/Entrepreneur, Educationist, Environmental Conserver, Industrialist, Public Administrator/ Manager, Scientist, Technologist or a leading Professional in their respective professional field.

c. Has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the society at national or global level. 

  1. MODE OF SUBMISSION

The proposals should be submitted online in the form prescribed below. The same should be submitted on or before Friday, 19th April 2024 by 4.00p.m.
