Karatina University, through the Internal Audit Department in collaboration with the School of Business and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Kenya, commemorated the International Internal Audit Awareness Month during an event held at the Mwai Kibaki Library on Friday, 15th May 2026. The event, themed “Inspiring the Next Generation of Internal Auditors,” brought together students, staff, and professionals to create awareness on the importance of internal auditing and inspire students to pursue careers in the profession.

The event was officially opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic, Research and Student Affairs, Prof. Franklin Wabwoba, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. In his remarks, Prof. Wabwoba emphasized the important role internal auditing plays in promoting accountability, transparency, integrity, and good governance within institutions. He noted that internal audit departments support organizations in identifying risks, enhancing compliance, and improving operational efficiency, while also ensuring corrective action on audit findings.
Senior Internal Auditor Ms. Cicely Kamwengu also gave a brief background on internal audit and highlighted its importance in enhancing organizational accountability and effectiveness.

The workshop featured discussions on career opportunities in internal auditing, best practices in the profession, emerging issues in auditing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, regulatory issues, and the growing importance of ethical leadership and accountability in institutions.

Representatives from the Institute of Internal Auditors also highlighted the benefits of student membership and professional certification pathways available to students interested in joining the profession. The engagement yielded positive outcomes, with five students registering as student members of the Institute of Internal Auditors during the event.

The students appreciated the University Management for providing them with an opportunity to learn, interact with professionals, and gain exposure to emerging trends and opportunities in the internal audit profession.
