The 14th Student Governing Council (SGC) of Karatina University was sworn in on Monday, 4th December 2023 at a colourful ceremony held at the Conference Hall. It was officiated by the University’s Legal Officer Ms. Anne Mumbi.
Present to witness the swearing-in were the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Linus M. Gitonga, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Planning, Finance and Administration, Prof. Richard Kiai, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Research and Students’ Affairs, Prof. Hellen Kamiri and the Dean of Students, Mr. Peter Ngugi.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor congratulated the incoming student leadership and thanked the outgoing leaders for showing maturity in embracing the democratic will of the student fraternity. He also explained that the University leadership, together with various stakeholders, is working towards addressing challenges facing students. The VC encouraged the student leaders to lead and treat everyone with dignity, both the students and the staff. The VC also emphasized on the need to work in harmony to increase productivity for the betterment of the University. He urged the new student leaders to emulate their predecessors and make an impact in the University. The VC also emphasized on the need for discipline and encouraged the leaders to work hard in order to excel in their academics.

In her remarks, the Ag. DVC (ARSA) noted the harmonious working relationship she has had with the outgoing SGC and urged the new leadership to emulate their predecessors and also engage her office whenever they needed guidance.
On the other hand, the Ag. DVC PF&A encouraged the newly elected student’ leaders to lead as an example and work with integrity. He also urged them to work smart.
The Dean of Students, Mr. Peter Ngugi, noted that the Karatina University Students Association (KUSA) leadership had met the constitutional threshold as per the University Amendment Act of 2016 and the KUSA Constitution in regard to students’ elections.
The incoming SGC Chairperson enumerated a plethora of issues that they will focus on during their tenure. The election was conducted on Monday, 27th November 2022 under the guidance of the Returning Officer, Dr. Flora Namu, and her two deputies; Dr. Jared Mutanya and Dr. Esther Kahariri. The election was free and fair. The results were credible, and there were no appeals.
