KARATINA UNIVERSITY MARKS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY WITH OUTREACH AT NYERI WOMEN PRISON

Karatina University, through the Directorate of Community Outreach, commemorated International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, with an outreach activity at Nyeri Women Prison aimed at celebrating, encouraging, and supporting women inmates while promoting mental well-being, dignity, and hope for personal transformation. The event brought together university staff, students, the Karatina University Choir, prison wardens, and inmates. The activity was led by the Director of Community Outreach, Prof. Margaret Mwenje.

During the celebration the inmates were taken through a mental health session led by the Senior University Counselor Ms. Jecinta Kabucho. The session focused on self-acceptance, self-esteem, and healthy coping mechanisms. She encouraged the inmates to recognize their inherent value and embrace personal growth as part of their rehabilitation journey

On the other side Prof. Mwenje also delivered an empowering talk emphasizing self-worth, self-forgiveness, and self-care. She encouraged the inmates to forgive themselves for past mistakes, rebuild confidence, and intentionally nurture their emotional and psychological well-being.

As part of the outreach initiative, Karatina University donated various items including personal hygiene products, stationery, baby blankets, snacks, and sandals to support the welfare of the inmates and their children.

The Officer in Charge of Nyeri Women Prison expressed appreciation to the university for the donations and the motivational engagement, noting the positive impact of the mental health and empowerment sessions. She also welcomed continued collaboration with the university in supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.
