KARATINA UNIVERSITY DEMONSTRATES COMMITMENT TO NURTURING FUTURE STEM LEADERS THROUGH 2ND MATHEMATICS CONTEST

Karatina University has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing future STEM leaders through the successful hosting of the Second Karatina University Mathematics Contest held on Saturday, 9th May 2026 at the Mwai Kibaki Library. The event was organized by the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science under the theme “Unlocking Potential, One Equation at a Time.” The contest brought together 480 students and 41 teachers from 16 secondary schools across Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Embu counties. This contest forms part of the University’s Math Locus Mentorship Programme, launched in 2025 to improve Mathematics performance, mentor learners, and inspire students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Through the programme, the University continues to strengthen community outreach by supporting learners through mentorship sessions, mathematics camps, symposiums, motivational talks, and teacher capacity-building initiatives. The programme particularly targets students with academic potential who may have negative attitudes towards Mathematics, helping them build confidence, improve performance, and broaden their career prospects.

The contest featured two categories, with Form Three students examined on content up to Surds, while Form Four students were tested on content up to Trigonometry.

Speaking during the event, invited guests encouraged learners to embrace Mathematics as a discipline that unlocks opportunities and drives socio-economic development. Among the speakers were Dr. Ben Kajwang, Director and CEO of the College of Insurance, Kenya; Ms. Vivian Kinya Muriuki, youth leader and Karatina University alumna; and Mr. Chege Bildad, Principal of Gitunduti Senior School.
