Thursday, 27th August 2026 marked the climax of the one-week orientation of the 2026/2027 first-year students with the Vice Chancellor’s Address and Luncheon at the Graduation Square. The event, held at the Graduation Square, was marked by a warm and vibrant atmosphere as the University formally welcomed its newest cohort of students. It was graced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Linus M. Gitonga, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Research and Students Affairs (ARSA), Prof. Franklin Wabwoba, members of Senate, University Management Board, and academic and administrative staff, who joined in welcoming the new students.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Wabwoba congratulated the first-year students on choosing Karatina University, assuring them that they were in the right place. He also encouraged them to treat one another well as they begin their university journey and reminded them that every student counts.
The Vice Chancellor, in his address themed “You are the Architect of the Future You Envision,” challenged the students to take ownership of their university journey and make their four years count. Using the analogy of a blueprint and construction site, he reminded the students that every choice, habit and experience contributes to the person they ultimately become. He further encouraged them to make full use of the University’s resources, including the library, laboratories, innovation spaces, clubs, sports and the Employability Centre, while engaging with their lecturers and actively participating in university life.

On the other hand, he likened the mind to a garden, urging the students to carefully cultivate what they allow to grow and to nurture discipline, consistency and curiosity while guarding against fear, procrastination, doubt and unhealthy comparison. He summed up his message with three guiding words: Discipline, Practice and Persistence, (DPP) while also urging the students to uphold integrity, make responsible choices and seek help whenever they encounter challenges.

Adding a student perspective to the occasion, a third year student Dickson expressed heartfelt appreciation to the University Management for the support that was extended to him since he joined.
In conclusion, he reminded the students that the University would provide an enabling environment for their success, but they must also play their part in building their future. “The ground is ready. The tools are here. The opportunity is yours,” Prof. Gitonga told the students, urging them not merely to pass through Karatina University, but to build something worthy of the opportunity they have been given.
