KARATINA UNIVERSITY MARKS MAZINGIRA WEEK 2026 THROUGH TREE-GROWING AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES

Karatina University through the School of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies supported by the Directorate of Career Services planted and distributed 6,500 tree seedlings during Mazingira Week 2026, extending its environmental conservation efforts to schools, local communities, market centres and forest landscapes across Nyeri County. Observed from 5 to 10 October 2026 under the theme “Growing a Greener Future: Grow, Protect, and Care for Our Environment,” the initiative brought together University staff and students, student clubs, community members, development partners and government agencies to promote tree growing, environmental restoration and sustainable environmental practices.

On 6 October 2026, the University, in partnership with the Pioneer Child Development Programme (PCDP), conducted tree-planting and school-greening activities at Macharia and Kiboya Comprehensive Schools in Naromoru. The University also donated water-storage tanks to the two schools and planted multipurpose fruit trees to promote environmental conservation and support learners’ nutrition.

On the other hand, the team extended its outreach to Chaka Market Centre, where they participated in an environmental clean-up and distributed free tree seedlings to traders and residents. The exercise encouraged responsible waste management, cleaner public spaces and greater community participation in tree growing.

On 10 October 2026, as the nation marked Mazingira Day, the University joined the national Presidential Green Challenge at Hombe Forest in Nyeri County, in collaboration with the National Government Administration Officers, Nyeri County, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and other stakeholders. The event brought together partners in support of national efforts to increase tree cover and restore forest landscapes. The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Energy, Mr. Alex Kamau Wachira, who was the chief guest, also participated in tree planting alongside students.

The University further distributed tree seedlings to residents of Gitunduti on the same day, encouraging households to take an active role in environmental conservation beyond organised planting events.

The Mazingira Week activities were coordinated by the School of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies and the Directorate of University Industry Linkages, Career Services and Alumni Affairs, with support from the Office of Corporate Communication and student club editorial offices in documenting and publicising the activities.

The initiative reinforces Karatina University’s commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action and community engagement. The University will continue to encourage stakeholders to nurture and protect planted trees to enhance seedling survival and ensure lasting environmental benefits.

Through collaborative efforts in tree growing, environmental education and community outreach, Karatina University continues to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
