On 16th November, 2023 Karatina University Geography students launched the Geographical Information Systems Club. The Chairperson of the club Samuel Muchemi stated that the club will benefit the students in their career development, the University and the host community as well. Some of the objectives of the Club are to provide insights into social, economic and environmental patterns, relationships, and trends to guide decision-making. The Club Patron, Dr. Tom Ouna from the School of Education, highlighted the benefits of the Club to the student in the job market. He started that the club will shape the students into their career development and advancement. The club received licenses worth 1million dollars, the licenses donated by ESRI Eastern Africa are to enable the member’s access and carry out geospatial related research. With the licenses the members of the GIS Club Karatina will be able implement the program and take part in various researches. The one million dollars by ESRI is to support and enhance the study of Geographic Information System among students. With the support from Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), Kenya club can be fully functional. The Members were encouraged to purchase laptops so as to install the licenses and data that is given to them.
During the function, the guest speaker, Ms. Dorothy from ESRI encouraged the members to take the Club seriously. She explained that ESRI supports professionals and they offer free online courses through the ESRI Academy and Community where the individuals assemble and share ideas. Ms. Dorothy presented gifts to the club, and books that would guide the club. She stated that after checking out the connectivity of the Institution, ESRI will support in setting up a fully equipped and operational lab.
The University’s Director of Career Services and University-Industry Linkages Prof. Kenneth Wanjau reported that the Vice Chancellor approves the formation of club and is dedicated to supporting its activities.
