UNIVERSITY SEEKS DIALOGUE WITH HOSTEL OWNERS AMID RISING RENTAL FEES.

Karatina University recently hosted a crucial meeting with hostel owners to address the escalating rental fees affecting students. The event, held on August 1, 2024, at the university’s conference hall, was attended by University Management including the Vice Chancellor Prof. Linus Gitonga, acting Deputy Vice Chancellors Prof. Hellen Kamiri (ARSA), and Prof. Richard Kiai (PF&A), Dean of Students Dr. Peter Ngugi, and student leaders. Ms. Maureen Wahome, a representative from the Rent Tribunal overseeing Nyeri County, was also present to provide legal insights.

In his address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Linus M. Gitonga emphasized the importance of treating students with care and cautioned hostel owners against arbitrary rental fee increases. He highlighted the significance of the university-community partnership and reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with the community to address shared challenges. The VC stressed that unreasonable rent hikes negatively impact both students and hostel owners, urging a balanced approach to rental adjustments.

Speaking during the event Ms. Maureen Wahome from the Rent Tribunal provided legal clarity on rental regulations and tenant rights, ensuring that both students and hostel owners are well-informed about their respective rights and responsibilities. Her presentation aimed to foster transparency and fairness in rental practices.

On the hand, the student leaders present voiced their concerns, detailing the challenges faced by students, including instances of exploitation, maintenance issues, and intimidation by some landlords. They highlighted the financial burden of increasing rental fees and called for greater accountability to protect the student body.
